Can someone tell me how Owl City happened? I mean, not in the “why do bad things happen to good people sense,” although if you have some answers for theodicy, that’ll work as well.

I want to know how a guy goes from recording albums in his parent’s basement to getting signed by a major label. Is it Myspace? Was “Be My Escape” such a huge recurrent hit that “featuring the guy from Relient K” is that big of a selling point? I just find it hard to completely trust the marketing hype of “unknown musician makes good via internet.”

There’s always a catch.
